Key takeaways
- As of October 27, 2026, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot carry ads, and Google is testing ads in AI Mode.
- ChatGPT ads are bought directly in OpenAI's Ads Manager or through OpenAI partners.
- Ads in Google's AI surfaces and in Copilot come from existing Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising campaigns, and the platforms decide placement.
- The Gemini app, Claude and Perplexity sell no ads, so visibility there is organic only.
- Google offers no segmented reporting for ads inside AI Overviews, and Microsoft offers no Copilot-specific metrics.
As of October 27, 2026, three AI assistant surfaces sell ads you can actually buy: ChatGPT (through OpenAI's Ads Manager or its partners), Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode (through ordinary Google Ads campaigns), and Microsoft Copilot (through ordinary Microsoft Advertising campaigns). The Gemini app, Claude and Perplexity carry no ads. Meta AI and Grok have no ad product inside their answers that we could confirm from an official source.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this page shows the source for every row, what "buyable" means on each platform, and what you control versus what the platform decides.

How do you buy ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT is the only assistant in the table where you buy a placement in the assistant itself rather than feeding an existing search campaign into it. OpenAI started testing ads in the US on February 9, 2026. On May 5, 2026, it said advertisers could create ads through partners or a beta self-serve Ads Manager, and added cost-per-click bidding alongside the original cost-per-thousand-impressions model.
Details that matter for planning:
- Who sees them: adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not get ads, and accounts identified as under 18 are excluded.
- Where they show: usually below a response. Temporary Chats show no ads.
- What is off limits: ads are kept away from conversations about personal health, mental health and politics, and political advertising is not allowed.
- Where you can buy: self-serve access depends on where your billing entity is based. OpenAI lists the eligible countries on its Ads Manager availability page, and some newer European markets start through OpenAI's sales team or partners instead.
- What you can measure: impressions, clicks and spend in Ads Manager, plus conversions through OpenAI's Conversions API or pixel. You get aggregated reporting, not individual conversations.
OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. So buying an ad gets you a labeled unit near the answer, not a mention inside it. For the mechanics in more depth, see how ChatGPT ads work.
Can you buy ads in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Not as a separate line item. Ads in both come from the Google Ads campaigns you already run, and Google chooses when to show them.
For AI Overviews, Google's help page says text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can show inside the overview, and that ads can show above or below AI Overviews in every market where they appear. Ads inside the overview are currently limited to English in a set list of countries that includes the US, Canada, Australia and India. Google is explicit about three limits: you cannot target the placement, you cannot opt out of it, and there is no segmented reporting for ads shown inside AI Overviews.
AI Mode is less settled. Google began testing ads in AI Mode in the US in 2025, drawing on Search campaigns using broad match, Shopping and Performance Max. A Google spokesperson described it in November 2025 as a test that was still under way. At Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026, Google said it is testing two new AI Mode formats, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, and pointed advertisers to AI Max and Performance Max campaigns as the foundation for them. Google says these formats are labeled as sponsored.
The practical reading: if you run healthy Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns, you are eligible. You are not buying AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google offers no segmented reporting for ads inside AI Overviews, and we found none described for AI Mode.
How do ads get into Microsoft Copilot?
Through Microsoft Advertising, automatically. Microsoft's help page says all eligible campaign and ad types are opted in to serve in Copilot, that advertisers cannot opt out, and that there is no guarantee an ad will be displayed there. Eligible types include Product ads (Shopping and Performance Max), Multimedia ads, some vertical ads, and Search ads that carry a logo. That last point is easy to miss: Search ads without a logo or business-logo extension are not eligible.
Your negative keywords apply in Copilot the same way they do on Bing, and ads are not shown in conversations Copilot flags as potentially harmful. The catch is reporting: Microsoft says it does not currently offer Copilot-specific metrics.
Which assistants are organic-only, and how sure is that?
These are the platforms where your only lever is being a credible, well-documented answer. Each status comes from a public statement, and public statements can change.
- Gemini app: Google's VP of Global Ads, Dan Taylor, said in December 2025 that "there are no ads in the Gemini app and there are no current plans to change that." Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis repeated in January 2026 that Google had no plans for Gemini ads "at the moment." That position has softened: on Google's April 2026 earnings call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler said the company is open to ads in the Gemini app and that formats working in AI Mode could carry over. No Gemini app ad product had launched as of October 27, 2026. Note this covers the Gemini app, not Google Search, where AI Overviews and AI Mode do carry ads.
- Claude: Anthropic said on February 4, 2026 that Claude will stay ad-free, with no sponsored links beside conversations. It added that if it ever revisits that, it will say why.
- Perplexity: Perplexity tested sponsored placements starting in 2024. In February 2026, its executives said they had been phasing ads out and had no plans for more, citing user trust.
- Meta AI: in October 2025, Meta said it would use people's interactions with its AI to personalize ads on Facebook and Instagram, but had no imminent plans to put ads in its AI products. Those ads run in Meta's feeds, not inside Meta AI answers.
- Grok: Elon Musk told advertisers in 2025 that X plans to put ads in Grok's answers. We could not find an official X or xAI page describing a buyable Grok ad product, so treat it as announced, not available.
If a vendor tells you they can place you in Gemini, Claude or Perplexity answers for a fee, ask which official ad product they mean. None of the three sells one.
What should you do with this table this week?
- Split the budget question in two. ChatGPT is a new buy with its own account, creative and bids. Google and Copilot are an extension of search campaigns you may already run. Plan them separately.
- Check your billing country against OpenAI's availability page before planning a ChatGPT test.
- Make your search campaigns eligible. Add a logo to Microsoft Advertising Search ads, review negative keywords on both platforms, and keep product feeds clean for Shopping and Performance Max.
- Accept the reporting gap. Google does not segment reporting for ads inside AI Overviews, and Microsoft offers no Copilot-specific metrics, so set expectations with whoever signs off on the spend.
- Cover the organic-only assistants. Gemini, Claude and Perplexity can only be reached through the content and citations they draw on. Our guide to paid vs organic in AI answers explains how the two work together.
A worked example, labeled illustrative: a retailer with a $3,000 monthly test might put $1,500 into a ChatGPT campaign, where it controls bids and creative, and leave its existing Google and Microsoft Shopping campaigns running as they are, since eligibility for the AI placements there comes from those campaigns rather than a separate buy. The split is a planning choice, not a benchmark; the point is that only one of those lines is new spend on an AI assistant.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy ads in Google Gemini?
Not today. The Gemini app had no ads as of October 27, 2026, though Google said in April 2026 that it is open to adding them. Google Search is different: ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can appear in AI Overviews, and Google is testing ads in AI Mode. Google decides when those ads show, and you cannot target the placement directly.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
According to OpenAI's Help Center, ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans, usually below a response. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads, and accounts identified as under 18 are excluded. Temporary Chats show no ads, and ads are kept away from conversations about health, mental health and politics.
Can I opt my campaigns out of Copilot or AI Overviews?
No. Microsoft's help page says eligible campaigns are automatically opted in to Copilot and advertisers cannot opt out, though negative keywords still apply. Google's help page says you cannot opt out of ads in AI Overviews or target that placement directly. Neither platform currently offers separate reporting for those AI placements, so results blend into your normal search reporting.
Does Perplexity still sell ads?
No. Perplexity tested sponsored placements starting in 2024, and in February 2026 its executives said the company had been phasing ads out and had no plans for more, citing user trust. It has not ruled out revisiting the decision. For now, the only way to appear in Perplexity answers is organically, through content and sources it cites.
Do ads change what ChatGPT says in its answers?
OpenAI says no. Its Help Center states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and run on separate systems, so advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses. A ChatGPT ad is a labeled unit shown near the answer, typically below it. Appearing inside the answer itself depends on organic factors, not ad spend.
