Paid placements and organic recommendations: why you need both.

Most vendors sell one or the other. The businesses winning in AI answers are doing both, in a specific order. Here is why.

Two different things

A sponsored placement is an ad that appears with an AI answer, labeled as sponsored, bought through an official platform like OpenAI's Ads Manager, Google Ads or Microsoft Advertising. An organic recommendation is when the assistant itself names you in its answer because, based on everything it has learned, you're a good fit. The first can be bought today. The second can't be bought at all.

What paid does well

  • Speed. You're beside relevant answers within days of launch.
  • Control. You choose the offer, the message and the geography.
  • Data. Clicks and leads tell you which questions actually convert, which is the most valuable input to the organic work.

Where paid fails alone

  • It only reaches Free and Go users on ChatGPT, and nothing at all on assistants with no ad inventory, such as Claude, the Gemini app, Perplexity and Meta AI.
  • It stops the moment you stop paying.
  • It sits beside the answer, not inside it. If the assistant recommends two competitors in the answer and your ad appears below, you're third.

What organic does well

  • Reach everywhere. Organic recommendations work on all assistants, including the ad-free ones and the paid tiers.
  • Trust. Being the assistant's own recommendation carries more weight than a labeled placement.
  • Compounding. Clear entity data, consistent listings, real reviews and content written to be quoted keep working month after month.

Where organic fails alone

  • It's slow. Models update on their own schedules, and third-party citations take time to earn.
  • It's hard to steer. You can't choose the offer the assistant mentions, or make it mention you for a prompt where you have no footprint.
  • Without paid data, you're guessing which prompts are worth the effort.
The order matters: paid first, to be present and to learn. Organic second, aimed by what paid taught you. Then paid narrows to the prompts organic can't yet win.

How a combined plan runs

  1. Month one: sponsored placements launch across your prompt families. Baseline share of answers is recorded.
  2. Month two: paid results show which families convert. Organic work starts on the highest-value families you're not yet named in.
  3. Month three onward: as organic share rises in a family, paid budget shifts to the families still underperforming. Total cost per lead falls because the organic wins are free.

This is why we report the two numbers separately and never blend them. You should be able to see exactly what you bought and exactly what you earned.

Frequently asked questions

Can organic AI recommendations be bought?

No. When an assistant names your business in its answer, that recommendation is earned from what the model has learned about you. Paid placements are separate, labeled ads that appear with the answer.

Should I start with paid or organic?

Usually paid first, to be present quickly and learn which questions convert, then organic work aimed at the highest-value questions paid revealed. Over time, paid budget shifts to the questions organic cannot yet win.

Which AI assistants are organic-only today?

Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Meta AI and Grok have no official ad inventory for advertisers today. Paid placements are bought directly in ChatGPT, and through Google Ads and Microsoft Advertising campaigns that are eligible to appear in Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Copilot.
